Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is a main food source for Indonesian people, consumed by more than 200 million people. This research was aimed to test the adaptability, growth and production of four local rice varieties on two soil types, i.e. mineral and peat soil. The rice varieties used in this study were two varieties from Riau (Mondam and Batu bara) and two varieties from West Sumatera (Benang pulau and Sokan putih). The result showed that all of the varieties were intolerant of peat soil but tolerant of mineral soil. The morphological character of vegetative parts of these variety was almost similar, the only difference was found in Batu bara variety, with elongated part at the end of unhulled rice. Sokan putih variety showed the highest vegetative growth on plant height (50,58 cm).en_US
