Abstract
The Malayan sun bear (Helarctos malayanus) is one of the largest mammals in
Indonesia, residing in Kalimantan and Sumatra. This species is threatened with
extinction due to the reduced population and habitat caused by natural and human
disturbances. This paper identifies and describes threats to sun bear populations. Data
collection includes literature and literature studies. The sun bear population faced
threats due to human activities in the form of illegal hunting, deforestation and forest
fragmentation through encroachment and logging.
