Abstract
Bamboo is a non-timber forest product (NTFP) that is widely used by rural communities.
Bamboo plays a role in the hydrological system and soil stability, especially in areas
with higher slopes, such as Pangkalan Koto Baru District, Lima Puluh Kota Regency,
West Sumatra Province. The form of bamboo utilization by the local community in
Pangkalan Koto Baru District is unexplored. Therefore purpose of this study was to
determine the various forms of bamboo utilization by local community in Pangkalan
Koto Baru District. This research was conducted using exploratory methods and
semi-structured interviews. The data obtained are presented in tables and figures.
Results of this study obtained five genera of bamboo (Bambusa, Dendrocalamus,
Gigantochloa, Schizostachyum and Thyrsostachys), 11 species (B. Blumeana, B.
multiplex, B. vulgaris, B. vulgaris var. striata, D. asper, G. hasskarliana, G. pruriens, S.
brachycladum, S. latifolium, S. zollingeri and T. simanesis), and one variety (striata).
Bamboo is used by the community for food (bamboo shoots), household utensils,
fishing rods, stakes, fences and greenery.
