Abstract
The research entitled Language Learning Strategies Used by the Students at State
Senior High Schools: An lndonesia Context (A Case Study in Pekanbaru Riau
Province) aims at a) determining language learning strategies used by the students of
secondary schools learning English in Indonesia; b) explaining the relationship between
several learning factors like gender, ethnicity, and learning motivation; and c) exploring
the relationship between language learning strategies and success in English final
examination. The population of the study is all the third year students of 200512006
term as many as 4.000 participants, l0 % of which is the sampling size of the study
(400 students). The primary data collected by interviewing l3 English teachers from
those schools focused on the steps taken by the students in the classroom, out of the
class, and in the final examination While the secondary data is taken from the
document of English national final examination results of20o512006. The results of the
study are as the following: a) the excellent students maximize practicing related
activities in the classroom out of the class, and in the national final examination b)
there is no significant difference between gender (male and female students) as well as
ethnicity in practicing language learning strategies in vise versa the learning motivation
of the students contributes significantly to the practices of language learning strategies;
and c) there is also significant relationship between the level of language learning
strategies and the success of learning English. The similar further study should be
conducted by giving the students questionnaires and depth-interview for certain aspects
to support the collected data, and observing the students activities in the classroom, out
of the class, and in the national final examination.
